The Next Inflection Point in Computing - Niantic AR at MWC 2019

This year’s Mobile World Congress marked an important milestone in the potential of augmented reality (AR) experiences. Mobile network operators (MNOs), network equipment providers (NEPs) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) convened to highlight their latest contributions to a true 5G future. A future designed to drive several orders of magnitude improvement for networks, devices–and the experiences they power.

For our part, we partnered with Deutsche Telekom, MobilEdgeX, and Samsung to showcase an exclusive Codename: Neon experience powered by Mobile Edge computing. We believe Codename: Neon offers just a glimpse into the kinds of AR experiences that we can bring to the world as a collective industry working together.

At Niantic, we have long challenged the boundaries of today’s networks since the introduction of Pokémon GO in 2016. Our pursuit of AR innovation even led to the creation of our own technology platform: the Niantic Real World Platform, which provides the key building blocks for creating breakthrough AR experiences.

Looking ahead, we believe AR represents a fundamental paradigm shift in computing when combined with next-generation ultra-low latency, high bandwidth networks. These advanced AR experiences will forever change the way people connect and experience the real world in their daily life.

While Mobile World Congress has come to an end, the innovation it unlocked is just the beginning–and we are excited by what we can build together with our ecosystem partners.
