In 2022, we announced our partnership with the Project for Public Spaces, focused on a Community Placemaking Grant that would fund and support a local public space initiative in the US. Today, we’re happy to share an update to that project!
As a result of that grant, we selected the North Ave. MARTA station plaza, a wonderful space in Midtown Atlanta. The Project for Public Spaces worked to gather community input, including public meeting times and feedback sessions alongside the Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and the Midtown Alliance. Additionally, Norfolk Southern, an Atlanta based company, has also partnered in this project, commissioning artist Carla Contreras to create the mural “Samaras” on location at the newly revived community space.
About the Public Space:
Serving about 15,000 transit riders daily and an additional 25,000 people who live, work, or visit nearby, the North Ave. MARTA station plaza’s transformation is set to deliver broad community benefits.
The first phase of improvements has already introduced upgraded seating, a fresh coat of paint, and new landscaping. The next phase added a 30-foot shipping container that will double as public art and a performance stage, along with tables, chairs, umbrellas, and other amenities.
With these enhancements, the plaza will become a lively activity center, hosting a schedule of music, dance, spoken word, and other performances managed by Midtown Alliance and MARTA Artbound. This vibrant programming aims to make the plaza a recognized community asset, encouraging social connections and enhancing the transit experience.
Niantic continues to support public space projects where our games are played and are excited to see another open space re-invigorated!
See you out there,
