More Than 3.4 Million Players Take Action on Earth Day to Support a Healthier Planet

On Earth Day, we shared our plans to help support a healthy planet through our people, products and players. Today, we’re excited to share the results of those initiatives.

First, more than 3.4 million players of Niantic games participated in Earth Day activities including cleaning up their local parks and neighborhoods, participating in in-game events, and engaging in in-game sustainability education.

In Pokémon GO, game designers crafted a special Sustainability campaign which included research tasks, where players received rewards for exploring up to 3km, catching Pokémon, and hatching Eggs. Additionally, Community Ambassadors from around the world hosted 500 meetups focused on cleaning up local parks. For example, in Wales, players coordinated with the local Cardiff North Scout group and Keep Wales Tidy, filling 7 big bags of litter.

Players in Vancouver gathered at the annual Surfrider beach clean up, which they attend every year, filling up 12 large buckets with both litter and washed up debris. We’re incredibly impressed and grateful for the efforts of these players, whose clean up work has made a direct, positive impact on their local communities.

Pikmin Bloom players collectively planted more than 14 billion in-game flowers during its campaign, unlocking all the seedlings of Decor Pikmin as a reward – wearing items related to the earth and nature such as the Acorn, Shell and Present Sticker (Gold) Decor Pikmin (White Pikmin).

Ingress players recycled 22.4 million in-game items into Exotic Matter (XM) as a part of their campaign to encourage recycling.

And in Peridot, we encouraged our players to reduce their waste by sharing conservation tips using in-game messaging and social media.

And to round out the campaign, our employees volunteered during local sustainability events, clearing invasive plant species, planting native plants and trees, and picking up litter in local parks.

Finally, we’re excited to continue to participate in the Playing for the Planet Alliance’s Green Game Jam, which brings together game studios and tech companies to inspire greater sustainability efforts in gaming.

Change doesn’t happen overnight. We are proud to take steps each year that unite our community of players, employees, and partners in creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for our planet - all while having fun playing games together.
