Leveraging Games & AR Tech to Support a More Positive World:
Niantic Social Impact in 2024

Exploration: In 2024, people who played Niantic games moved a total of 5.9B km
Technology: Using Scaniverse, we worked to fundraise crucial funds for 3D map building in vulnerable communities
Community: 600+ community giving events

At Niantic, we build games and technology that naturally create positive change in communities around the world. Our approach moves beyond traditional corporate responsibility, focusing on three key areas:

  • Leveraging games to raise awareness about important causes
  • Advancing mapping technology to better support underserved communities
  • Creating partnerships with innovative NGOs and impact organizations

Our 2024 highlights are:

Peridot, our whimsical AR pet game, took social impact to a whole new level. They used the game to raise money and awareness for sustainability initiatives, partnered with a physical therapy organization to drive more engagement, and created a meditation experience for World Mental Health Day. You can read more about their efforts here.

Scaniverse, which seeks to help create a 3D map of the world, raised money for Missing Maps and OpenStreetMap Foundation, raising thousands of dollars in the process.

Niantic players, who play our games outside, participated in real world events including park clean ups and food donation drives. In all, we saw more than 600 social impact events around the world. In addition, our annual Pokémon GO Fest events generated a combined $200 million for local economies.

Mental health took center stage in the latter half of the year and we co-published the Positive Play Guide alongside Safe in Our World. This guide is focused on encouraging and supporting positive engagement between people in the real world.
