The following tips are designed to help parents or guardians support their children or teens have a safe and positive gaming experience.
Establish rules, such as where it is safe for your child to play, and limits on screen time, through open and ongoing conversation.
- Discuss with your child the physical limits of where it is safe to play, when they are with or without you.
- Android and iOS devices allow you to limit how much time you spend playing games, by setting screen time limits for categories of apps or individual apps themselves. More information on screen time restrictions for Android and iOS.
Have a conversation with your child about how they are protecting their privacy and security, and review the settings and tools available to help your child or teen control their experience.
Ask your child about their favorite feature, where they played today, and if they made any new friends. Through the Parent Portal, Niantic will send you an email when your child makes a new friend. Use this opportunity to engage and show your availability should they bring concerns to you.
By trying Niantic games and apps yourself, you will be more easily able to discuss how to stay safe online and offline. As you become more familiar with the platform, you’ll be able to help your child identify instances where you see potential safety issues.
